It's been over two years since the Elf Holy Hydration became viral on social media as a “hydration holy grail”. With almost all skincare influencers swearing by it so much that I had to try it as well.
And if you are wondering why I waited for over a year for a full review on here, then it means you probably missed my mini-review series on Instagram (which you should subscribe to by the way if you haven’t yet).
I made this e.l.f skincare review because I believe this moisturizer deserves a full breakdown. This is actually one of those products that delivered on all its claims and has become one of my go-to's and I just had to share it with you guys cause this product, in my opinion, is still very relevant this year.
My Experience With the e.l.f Holy Hydration Face Cream
I loved this face cream and was pretty satisfied with the delivery. I hope this e.l.f holy hydration face cream review also makes your decision on getting this product a positive one. I used this moisturizer for 2 months both morning and night and it did relieve my skin from dryness. Upon application, it absorbs easily into the skin and does not feel greasy. For some, it might feel a little bit sticky but I liked that because it did serve as a good base to make my foundation more spreadable on my skin.
Immediately I applied this cream to my damp skin, it felt considerably soothed and moisturized and yes it did make my skin appear plumper and brighter over time. However, I must state that I had other products in my routine to help brighten my skin. If you are looking for a stand-alone skin brightener, the Elf holy hydration face cream will not be enough on its own.
I also love the fact that you do not need to apply too much of the product and it lasted me a long time (which is great considering the price: quantity ratio). After 2 months of regular use, I still had some leftover which I handed over to my partner who couldn't stop raving about it after using it for 2 weeks.

Ingredients in the e.l.f Holy Hydration Face Cream
A quick look at the ingredient list of this product got me quite excited to try it as they met the 2 main criteria I usually look which are hydration and barrier protection. In terms of active ingredients, the stars of the show are:
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic Acid is a powerful skincare ingredient that deeply hydrates by retaining up to 1000 times its weight in water. Naturally occurring in our bodies, it aids in maintaining skin moisture, promoting a youthful, supple appearance. Its ability to replenish moisture helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, enhancing skin's overall health and appearance. Suitable for all skin types, Hyaluronic Acid is a crucial element in maintaining skin's barrier and hydration levels.
Squalane
Squalane, a stable and saturated oil, is renowned for its excellent moisturizing properties and compatibility with all skin types. It mimics the skin's natural sebum, enhancing elasticity and barrier integrity. Squalane absorbs quickly, combating dryness without leaving a greasy residue. It offers antioxidant properties, protecting against environmental damage and free radicals. Additionally, it promotes skin healing and reduces inflammation, making it beneficial for conditions like eczema and acne. Overall, squalane contributes to healthier, more radiant skin. I reviewed The Ordinary's Squalane Cleanser. It is a perfect product for makeup removals.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3, offers diverse benefits for skin health. It strengthens the skin's barrier, reducing moisture loss and improving hydration. Its anti-inflammatory properties soothe redness and inflammation, making it effective for acne and rosacea. Niacinamide regulates oil production, thus helping control breakouts. It also minimizes the appearance of pores and improves uneven skin tone. As an antioxidant, it protects the skin from environmental stressors, while its role in collagen production helps reduce signs of aging.
Vitamin B5
Vitamin B5, also known as Pantothenic Acid or Panthenol, is a skin-soothing agent renowned for its deep hydration properties. It helps retain moisture, enhancing skin softness and elasticity, thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Its healing properties help regenerate and repair skin, making it beneficial for wound healing and skin conditions like acne. Its anti-inflammatory effects can soothe redness and irritation. With antioxidant properties, Vitamin B5 protects the skin against environmental damage, contributing to a healthier, smoother complexion.
Peptides
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins like collagen, elastin, and keratin, crucial for maintaining skin's strength and resilience. They signal the skin to produce more collagen, combating signs of aging like wrinkles and loss of firmness. Certain peptides also hydrate, heal, and soothe the skin. Moreover, they can boost overall skin health, improving texture, elasticity, and tone. By communicating with cells to perform specific functions, peptides play a pivotal role in maintaining healthy, youthful skin.
How Does the e.l.f Holy Hydration Face Cream Work?
When applied, the cream's hydrating ingredients (like hyaluronic acid and squalane) replenish the skin's moisture levels and strengthen its barrier, which helps prevent future moisture loss. Simultaneously, the peptides and niacinamide in the cream work to improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and even out skin tone.
Final Thoughts
As someone who has struggled with dryness for over 20 years, I know how hard it is to find a moisturizer that works. As such, having a positive experience with the e.l.f Holy Hydration face cream was a real joy and I recommend it to anyone with dry skin. I loved this product so much that I equally tried the e.l.f Holy Hydration Hydrogel (check out my Elf Holy Hydration Hydrogel vs. Elf Holy Hydration Face cream review on Instagram)
