Why Is Skincare So Important? (Basic Products To Start With)

Updated: Jun 15

When most people think of skincare, they do so from a purely aesthetic point of view. I mean, yes, it is about looking good however, skincare is more than that. The skin is not only the largest organ of the body, but it also forms the first layer of defence against external aggression. This is a huge aspect of the general health we usually take for granted, and why skincare matters.

Keeping The Skin Barrier Strong

I first learned about the skin barrier in 2019 (my DIY skincare era, lol) in a blog post while searching for possible reasons why my skin was regularly inflamed. What I learned completely changed my approach to skincare, as I realized that it carried health implications as well.

First, let's run through a quick anatomy course; the skin is made of 3 layers. The epidermis, dermis, and the hypodermis. The epidermis, which is the outermost layer of the skin, acts as the skin’s barrier. Its principal function is to protect the skin from external aggressions, hydrate the skin, and convey nutrients into the deeper layers of the skin.

The skin barrier is usually compared to a brick wall with our skin cells acting as the bricks while the mortar consists of a blend of nutrients like essential fatty acids, cholesterol, and ceramides also known as natural moisturizing factors. When present at optimal levels, these compounds ensure water retention in the skin and block out infections and pollutants that can be harmful to the skin.

Certain factors like genetics, age, smoking, etc. can negatively impact the skin’s barrier resulting in dehydration, dullness, inflammation, and frequent breakouts. Using skincare products that contain barrier-replenishing ingredients becomes essential to maintain the skin’s health. A healthy skin barrier is primordial to healthy and clear skin.

Protecting Against Environmental Toxins

Speaking of environmental nasties, did you know that your skin is constantly battling against pollutants, UV rays, and other harmful toxins? It's like a daily war out there! A solid skincare routine is your skin's armor in this battle, helping to fend off the effects of pollution and sun exposure that can lead to premature aging, dullness, and even skin damage. Using products that contain antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, exfoliating, hydrating, and soothing actives reinforces your skin’s ability to work and look its best

Boosts Your Appearance and Confidence

Now, who doesn't love a bit of glow and confidence? When your skin looks good, it's amazing how much more confident you feel. It's not just about vanity; it's about feeling great in your skin. A well-cared-for complexion can make you feel ready to take on the world – or at least your day! Skincare rituals even contribute to boosting your mental health, especially if you deal with a high-stress environment on a daily. Taking out a bit of time in the day to pamper yourself can go a long way to relax you.

Getting Started With A Simple Skincare Routine

Now that you know how important skincare is for your well-being, the next step is to build a skincare routine that will address your needs. Here are a few tips on how to go about it (here’s an in-depth guide on everything you need to know about building an effective skincare routine)

Talk to a Professional

Trying to sort out all the information available online about skincare products and routines is the long way to get to your skincare goals. On the other hand, talking to a professional is usually the easiest option. My first recommendation is to always try to see a dermatologist, especially if you are dealing with a skin condition.

Cleanser

Every skincare routine starts with a good cleanser to get rid of impurities, that accumulate on the skin throughout the day. One of my best picks for newbies is the Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser a gentle and affordable option.

Toner

Toners are one of my favorite things because of how much freshness they bring to the skin. In addition, to balancing the skin’s pH after cleansing, toner hydrates, soothes, calms, nourishes, and improves skin texture. My go-to toner is the internet sensation, Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner. This Korean toner has amazing benefits and is great for all skin types, especially for the girlies struggling with inflammation - think acne, redness, and sensitive skin.

Exfoliant

Getting rid of dead skin cells on your skin is essential to have a smooth texture and even tone. I am a sucker for chemical exfoliants that gently exfoliate the skin without being too drying, like the BY WISHTREND Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water.

Moisturizer

A moisturizer is essential as it hydrates and nourishes the skin, preventing dryness and irritation. It helps maintain the skin's natural moisture barrier, protecting against environmental damage and keeping the skin supple and youthful. For my normal to dry skin girlies, you will love the Curel Skin Care Intensive Face Moisturizer Cream. If you have oily skin/combination skin, the Byoma Gel Cream is a must!

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the most important aspect of your routine and you definitely should not be skipping it. The Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 50 is a cult favorite that blends skin hydration and sun protection with absolutely no white cast, greasiness, or irritation.
